Chrysler Hires Jim Press From Toyota as President (Update6)

Sept. 6 (Bloomberg) -- Chrysler LLC hired Jim Press to lead its sales and marketing, luring away the executive who helped propel Toyota Motor Corp. to No. 2 in the U.S. auto market.

Press, 60, is the second leader Chrysler has snagged from Japan's Toyota in the month since Cerberus Capital Management LP bought the fourth-largest U.S. automaker. Press, who worked with dealers and designers to shape models for the U.S. and improve customer service in 37 years at Toyota, will be president and vice chairman, Chrysler said in a statement today.

``This is quite a coup for Chrysler,'' said Jim Hall, vice president of industry analysis at market researcher AutoPacific Inc. ``Press understands automotive sales better than 98 percent of people involved in the business. More significantly, he has real product savvy, something that Chrysler desperately needs.''

Chief Executive Officer Robert Nardelli will oversee Press, who takes charge of sales, marketing and product strategy, and Tom LaSorda, who is president and vice chairman in charge of manufacturing, purchasing, employee relations and business development. LaSorda headed Auburn Hills, Michigan-based Chrysler before Cerberus bought an 80.1 percent stake in the automaker from DaimlerChrysler AG on Aug. 3.

``The question now is, what does this mean for LaSorda,'' said Dennis Virag, president of Automotive Consulting Group in Ann Arbor, Michigan. ``He was No. 1, then he was No. 2 and now, No. 3.''

Press's Replacement

Toyota promoted Shigeru Hayakawa to president of the North American unit to replace Press. Hayakawa has been executive vice president of Toyota Motor North America.

Press joins Chrysler Sept. 17. His compensation will be tied to the company's performance, Chrysler spokesman Mike Aberlich said. He declined to give a specific amount.

The company's other executive hire from Toyota was Deborah Wahl Meyer on Aug. 28. She had been vice president of marketing for Toyota's Lexus luxury division.

Press was the first non-Japanese member of Toyota's management board and also served as president and chief operating officer of its North American unit. In April, he was named as one of 18 senior managing directors at the Toyota City, Japan-based company. He also will be a board member at Chrysler.

In 1970, when Press joined Toyota, the automaker sold 208,315 vehicles in the U.S. The company has doubled its U.S. market share in the past decade, mostly at the expense of Chrysler and other U.S. automakers. From 1999 through 2006, Toyota's U.S. sales rose 72 percent to 2.54 million, while Chrysler's fell 24 percent to 2.14 million.

In August, Toyota passed Ford Motor Co. to become second in the U.S., behind General Motors Corp.

`American Icon'

``I relish this new opportunity with the Chrysler team to be a part of the resurgence of a true American icon here and around the world,'' Press said in a statement.

Private-equity firms such as Cerberus sometimes woo candidates eager to reap the rewards of fixing a closely held company. Mickey Drexler, the former chief executive officer of Gap Inc., took the top job at J. Crew Group Inc. in 2003 after it was bought by buyout firm TPG Inc. Drexler guided the company to a public offering last year and holds stock in J. Crew valued at $424 million, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

Press said his duties will include ``strengthening and energizing'' the company's dealer network, ``something I was passionate about at Toyota and will be passionate about at Chrysler.'' He was popular with Toyota dealers because he helped make them the industry's richest and was a frequent visitor to the outlets in the 1990s, meeting with salespeople and mechanics.

`Virtuoso'

Hiring Press shows Chrysler is serious about restructuring, said Rich Mullen, 45, who runs Mullen Motors in Southold, New York, with his father. The family has operated a dealership since 1927. The initial concern that Nardelli, a former CEO of retailer Home Depot Inc., wouldn't understand the auto business is evaporating with recent management changes, Mullen said.

``Press is a virtuoso of the automotive world,'' said Alan Helfman, 50, general manager of River Oaks Chrysler Jeep in Houston. ``This is like a dream come true. They reached out to the best of the best.''

United Auto Workers President Ron Gettelfinger said after a speech in Detroit that hiring Press was ``a great move on Chrysler's part.'' The automaker employs 41,249 UAW members.

Press joined Toyota in April 1970, became president of the company's U.S. sales operation in June 2005 and was promoted to his latest position a year ago. Before joining Toyota, he worked in Ford's sales operations and briefly for GM.

Meyer, who is Chrysler's chief marketing officer, is in charge of building the Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep brands worldwide. Meyer also previously worked at Ford.

Toyota's American depositary receipts rose 21 cents to $115.48 at 4:02 p.m. in New York Stock Exchange composite trading. They have declined 14 percent this year.
