The idea is theoretically sound. The heat that goes into the radiator is wasted energy. Crower is recovering it and getting an extra power stroke instead of throwing it away. Definitely an efficiency gain available, and a clever way of getting it l

i found this on Wikipedia and frankly it is a rather smart idea... but how good is is going to be in real life applications??

i came across and article many years ago that involves a modification on the standard 4 stroke engine to be theoretically a 5 stroke engine
the idea was to in crease the duration of the intake cam so that the intake valve is open for extra time while the piston is going up at the compression stroke and then it closes... the rest of the cycle is similar to the standard 4 stroke engine
it was argued that such change will practically reduce the engine's capacity as you don't actually burn 100% of the cylinder's capacity... this seems like a waist of power indeed
the real benefit - as they claim - that on the combustion stroke the piston will go down some 20% more travel distance and thus benefits more from the actual charge that was burned inside the engine... seems confusing huh?
a little example could clear this a bit so we will consider a 1000cc single piston engine running with such modification...
at the suction stroke the piston will suck in 1000cc of air/fuel
mixture
at the compression stroke the piston will actual expel some 200cc of air/fuel mixture then compress the remaining 800cc... practically we are as good as a 800cc engine at this point
at combustion the piston will travel downwards 20% more distance than it did when it actually started to compress the air/fuel mixture... at this point we are more efficient than a 800cc engine
the exhaust stroke is the same on both engines
practically we used 20% less fuel than a 1000cc engine and it is more effective than a 800cc engine they also recommended that such engine setup should be running with a supercharger to give the best results
the question is... is it really worth it to build a 1000 engine and let it run with 20% less fuel depending on an extra travel in the combustion stoke to compensate the lowered charge amount?

do you mean using the same cam or using a high lift cam which will be good at high revs but baad idle

i suppose lift is the valve travel into the combustion chamber while duration is the number of degrees out of the cam where the valve is open... i might have the terms confused or so but you got my point... right?
