GM Posts $4.2 Billion in Q3 Operating Loss, Says it Could Run out of Cash

General Motors posted a $4.2 billion third- quarter operating loss and said its available cash fell to $16.2 billion on Sept. 30 from $21 billion at the end of June. GM said that while it will try to boost liquidity, it might fall below the minimum amount of cash (estimated to be around $11 billion to $14 billion) needed to keep the company operating by the end of the year and asked for federal aid.

GM, which saw its U.S. auto sales fall a staggering 45% in October, reported a net loss of $2.5 billion or $4.45 per share for the third quarter, including special items. That compares with a net loss from continuing operations of $42.5 billion or $75.12 per share in the third quarter of 2007, which included a non-cash charge of $38.3 billion to establish a valuation allowance against some of the company's net deferred tax assets. The company's revenue for months of July, August and September was $37.9 billion, down from $43.7 billion in the year-ago quarter.

Trading of General Motors stocks halted at 11:04am EST this morning in anticipation of a major announcement concerning the company's financial situation. The substance of that announcement revealed that high fuel prices, slumping sales and a tough finance market have led to a net loss of $2.5 billion for the third quarter, and an adjusted loss of $4.2 billion.

The result isn't unexpected, as Ford announced a similar pre-tax result earlier today and the industry in general has been releasing poor to dismal figures all week. Nevertheless, the big loss means the planned pairing of Chrysler and GM is officially on the back burner for the near term even if major aid from the federal government does come through.

“The third quarter was especially challenging for the auto industry. Consumer spending, which represents close to 70 percent of the U.S. economy, fell dramatically, and the abrupt closure of credit markets created a downward spiral in vehicle sales,” said Rick Wagoner, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. “The U.S. government’s actions to help stabilize the credit markets and eventually ease the credit crunch are an essential first step to the economy’s and the auto industry’s recovery, but further strong action is required.”

Concerning previous talks with Chrysler concerning a possible merger or acquisition, Wagoner was succinct: ""We've concluded at this particular time that we are better off to put 100% of our efforts on the liquidity side. We've set aside such actions as a near term priority."

Financial prognostication through the end of 2008 is not optimistic, with the company planning to barely scrape by with the funds necessary to continue operations. The first two quarters of 2009 are equally bleak, with GM predicting it will barely be able to remain in business barring an economic turnaround, massive asset sales or some other intervention. The company hasn't come out and stated that bankruptcy is imminent, but the implication lies heavily over the news.

“Volatility in the world’s financial markets, tightening of consumer and business credit and historically-low consumer confidence has created a very challenging environment ,” said Wagoner. “Given the current lack of credit availability we must take further difficult ‘self-help’ actions.” Those self-help actions will be taken above and beyond the restructuring program announced earlier this year, designed to generate an additional $15 billion in liquidity for the company.

Production cutbacks, development delays and reduced support of the dealer network will account for major portions of the new initiatives. Additionally, GM plans to reduce its salaried employee cost by about 30%, meaning major layoffs throughout North America will likely be necessary, though GM plans to encourage as many voluntary early retirements and 'mutual separation programs' as possible.

The final tally has GM posting a $2.8 billion loss before tax, a loss of $2.5 billion after tax, an adjusted operating cash flow loss of $6.9 billion, and a net earnings loss per share of $4.45. Adjusted losses for Q3 2008 amounted to $4.2 billion, however, compared to $1.6 billion in the same period of 2007.

Chrysler LLC just released a statement from Bob Nardelli in which the CEO responds, in a way, to General Motors' third quarter earnings report. In the report, GM acknowledged that it had "recently explored the possibility of a strategic acquisition". While not citing Chrysler by name, we all know the strategic acquisition in question is the Auburn Hills-based automaker currently owned by private equity group Cerberus Capital Management. Nardelli responds by comically not confirming that his company was GM's target, reiterating for the umpteenth time that Chrysler doesn't talk about its business dealings with other companies because they often lead nowhere, like in this case we suppose. Of course, though his response confirms nothing, its mere existence confirms everything. All Nardelli does say is that Chrysler will continue to explore "multiple strategic alliances" that will aid its own turnaround effort. Carlos Ghosn, the prominent figurehead of Nissan/Renault whose companies were also on the short list of merger partners for Chrysler, should check his voicemail right about now.

Check out Nardelli's statement in his own words after the jump.

Ford Reports $2.7 Billion Operating Loss in Q3, Burns $7.7 Billion in Cash, Announces Job Cuts

It can't get any worse for Ford Motor Company - or can it? The American automaker today announced a third quarter net loss of $129 million which is actually smaller than the same period a year ago when FoMoCo lost $390 million. However, the company also posted a third quarter pre-tax operating loss from continuing operations (excluding special items) of $2.7 billion, down from a $194 million profit a year ago.

What's even more worrying is the fact that FoMoCo burnt $7.7 billion of its $26.6 billion cash reserves during the July - September period, or about $2.6 billion a month from an average of $1 billion a month over the prior 6 months. If Ford continues to burn its reserves at the same rate, it will be out of cash in about 7 months or until April 2009...

Ford disclosed steps to improve cash by as much as $17 billion through 2010. The actions that the company is planning to do include including a slash in annual capital spending to between $5 billion and $5.5 billion and further reductions of salaried personnel-related costs by an additional 10 percent by the end of January 2009 through layoffs, attrition and other actions.

    The actions include:

Reducing North American salaried personnel-related costs by an additional 10 percent by the end of January 2009, through personnel reductions, attrition and other actions. The reductions are in addition to personnel-related cost actions already taken in Ford North America and under way in Ford of Europe, Ford Asia Pacific and Africa, and Volvo.
Further reduction of U.S. hourly employees by approximately 2,600 as a result of the most recent round of targeted buyouts – bringing Ford's total U.S. hourly reductions through buyouts in 2008 to approximately 7,000.
Eliminating merit pay increases for North America salaried employees in 2009.
Eliminating performance bonuses for global salaried employees, including the Annual Incentive Compensation Plan for the 2008 performance year.
Suspending matching funds for U.S. salaried employees participating in Ford's Savings and Stock Investment Plan, effective Jan. 1, 2009.
Reducing annual capital spending to between $5 billion and $5.5 billion – enabled by efficiencies in Ford's global product development system and reduced spending in declining product segments.
Reducing engineering, manufacturing, IT and advertising costs through greater global efficiencies.
Reducing inventories globally and achieving other working capital improvements.
Return of capital from Ford Credit to Ford Motor Company consistent with Ford Credit's plan for a smaller balance sheet and a focus on core Ford brands.
Continuing to develop incremental sources of Automotive funding, including divesting of non-core operations and assets, and implementing equity-for-debt swaps.

On the same day that General Motors announced it would be discontinuing talks with Cerberus over a possible purchase of Chrysler, news hits by way of Reuters that a replacement suitor has sprung up. Wow, that didn't take long. The latest partner is none other than Hyundai, Korea's largest automaker. Not surprisingly, it's the Jeep brand that is again taking center stage according to these initial rumors. Everybody wants Jeep, it seems. If true, the possibility of breaking Chrysler's automotive operations into bits and pieces once again seems like a distinct possibility. What's more, after acknowledging that GM is abandoning talks of a "strategic acquisition," Chrysler's Bob Nardelli may now be back on the phone with Carlos Ghosn, head of the Nissan/Renault juggernaut, along with, presumably, anybody else who is willing to listen and has a pulse.

General Motors, looking to save every penny possible, announced yesterday that it will require salaried workers to take two extra vacation days in December - on top of the automaker’s two-week holiday shutdown. The automaker says that its headquarters and its manufacturing facilities will be fully staffed, but that most of the automaker’s operations will effectively shut down for an extra couple of days.

“We notified the employees last week that in our continued efforts to conserve cash we are asking employees to take two additional vacation days,” GM spokesman Dan Flores told Automotive News. “It’ll give us significant savings in utilities and facility expenses.”

GM’s Warren, Michigan, engineering center, which employs more than 16,000, its Milford, Michigan, proving grounds and its desert proving grounds in Mesa, Arizona, will all be quiet on December 22 and 23.

General Motors cannot wait until Barack Obama’s January 20th inauguration as President of the United States to get financial aid from the government, CEO Rick Wagoner said in an interview published Monday evening. Rather, the company needs help within the coming weeks to regain stability.

U.S. Congressional leaders have asked Bush administration Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson to add the automakers to the $700 billion financial rescue plan, but so far no decision has been made. The current administration has planned on leaving such decisions to Obama’s team, but according to Wagoner, there might not be time for that.

As noted earlier, analysts believe the collapse of GM could spell disaster for other auto giants like Ford, Toyota, and Honda. Not to mention the possible effect it could have on the U.S. economy as a whole.

“This is an issue that needs to be addressed urgently,” Wagoner told Automotive News, stating that now is the time to “overshoot, not undershoot” the scope of assistance.

Wagoner said GM is willing to cap executive pay, give the government preferred stock, and rush more fuel efficient vehicles to market. But he’s unwilling to step down as CEO, and he doesn’t think major management changes will solve the problem.

“I don’t think it’d be a very smart move,” he said. “I think our job is to make sure we have the best management team to run GM. It’s not clear to me what purpose would be served [by resignation].”

General Motors shares plummeted $1, or 23% to $3.36 on the New York Stock Exchange today-their lowest point since 1949- after a Deutsche Bank AG analyst downgraded the automakers stocks, saying they may be worthless in a year. "Even if GM is able to secure immediate U.S. government support, we believe that GM's predicament has the potential to set in motion a sequence of events that would be bankruptcy-like," said Deutsche Bank analyst Rod Lache.

In the note that was sent to investors, Lache wrote that that General Motors' U.S. cash reserves could very well fall to $5 billion by late December meaning that the largest American automaker would virtually run out of cash and would not be able to pay the supplier bills for its domestic operations that come due in January 2009.

And even in the scenario that GM somehow manages to get a government aid, Lache supported that such an action would most likely make unsecured investors such as shareholders make a run for it.

Last Friday, 7 November, GM announced that it lost $2.5 billion (net loss) in the third quarter of the year while burning $4.8 billion in cash. The firm's (global) cash reserves on September 30, 2008, totaled $16.2 billion.
"Even if GM implements the planned operating actions that are substantially within its control, GM's estimated liquidity during the remainder of 2008 will approach the minimum amount necessary to operate its business," the company said in a statement.

In order to keep its operations afloat, GM is looking to secure at least $10 billion in government loans.

Despite Reuters reports of Hyundai's interest in Chrysler and specifically the Jeep brand, Hyundai has gone on record denying it. We've grown accustomed to automakers giving the arbitrary "no comment" response when the rumormill swirls with corporate takeover talk, but Hyundai has flat-out denied any interest at all. Almost in the same sentence, though, officials from the Korean automaker state that the company is interested in constructing new plants overseas, so we wonder if there's any fire behind the smokescreen, possibly outside the United States. Perhaps not.

There still remains the chance that Chrysler's automotive operations will be parted out and sold to the highest bidder, regardless of who that party may be. At the very least, Cerberus could decide to sell manufacturing plants to various automakers like Hyundai or the Nissan/Renault alliance, whose offer for 20% of the ailing American automaker may not seem so bad after all.
