Investment Dar to Launch Takaful Operation in Egypt

The Investment Dar Company of Kuwait is poised to launch a new operation for Islamic insurance (takaful) in the Egyptian market, intensifying competition among takaful providers in the local market.


According to Mohsen Ismail, head of financial supervision at the Egyptian Insurance Supervisory Authority, a delegation from Investment Dar had discussed with chairman of EISA Adel Monir the incorporation of the new company. The operation's paid-in capital is set at E£150 million, which, according to Ismail, marked a strong start for a takaful operation in Egypt.

Ismail told NOOZZ on Tuesday that the Kuwait-based company would apply for initial approvals from the General Authority of Investment in September 2007, noting that the company has conducted an assessment on the market opportunities for Islamic insurance products.

At present, only a single insurance operation in Egypt provides takaful products, but EISA has approved three other insurers to provide the same service in the domestic market.
