    Ferrari F430 Scuderia









    It's not a good sign when there is a massive throng pushing into the display hall and an announcement from inside the hall is asking people to step back away from the stage. But when the booth happens to have a Prancing Horse above it and none other than 7-time World Champion Michael Schumacher is standing front and center, it's understandable that there might be some interest in seeing what he has to show. Jean Todt was even on the outside looking in...for a short time. He was here like the rest of us, of course, to see Schumacher unveil Ferrari's latest track model for the street, the F430 Scuderia. We already know all of the pertinent details about the car, but seeing one in person was what this event was all about. And it didn't hurt that MS was here for the photo op. We actually lucked out and he walked right up to us at the side of the stage after his introduction. He looked incredibly well-rested and relaxed, unlike the car which looks like it wants to jump out of its skin.

    Jaguar XF






    Immediately after images of the Jaguar XF appeared on the web a few weeks ago, debate began over whether this new sedan will save or sink Ford's feline brand. We've now seen the car in person at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show, and we can at least say it earns this year's honor of being the most difficult car to shoot with a camera. We did our best though, despite Jaguar's horrendous lighting. First of all, the surfacing of the Jaguar is very complex, switching between concave and convex frequently, especially up front. The poor lighting did show that the XF loves to play with light, so now we're even more interested in seeing one out in the sun. The rear is still derivative of an Aston Martin, but at least there's good trunk space back there. We sat in the back seat to take pics of the dash, and found leg room to be adequate while the seats were comfy. The dash itself, however, is still one of the best features of the XF, with design purportedly influenced by Apple hardware. It's simple, the buttons are extremely logical and the materials are at least as good as in the more expensive XK. Power for the XF comes from Jaguar's line of 4.2L V8 engines, one naturally aspirated at 300 HP and the other supercharged for 420 HP. No weak V6s here.

    Mitsubishi Concept cX









    Our man on the floor, Jonathan, snapped a set of live shots of Mitsubishi's Concept cX after the automaker took the wraps off its dual-purpose crossover. The AWD concept draws cues from the recently redesigned Lancer, with a mildly raked front clip, tautly drawn headlamps, a gaping maw and a duo of heavily accented swage lines that flank the hood and sides. Power comes via a 134 HP 1.9-liter variable turbine geometry-equipped turbo diesel making 206 lb.-ft. of torque. Grunt is sent to all four wheels via a dual-clutch SST automated manual transmission, while the exterior is made of more eco-friendly elements, including organic resin from bamboo.

    Dodge Journey












    Chrysler fired its biggest salvo yet in the CUV wars by officially unveiling the Dodge Journey in front of a throng of mildly interested in journalists. Truly, if you've seen one CUV, you've seen them all, and the Dodge Journey is all kinds of derivative. Coming from the automaker that brought us the Viper, Charger, Magnum and Challenger Concept in recent years, the Journey's design comes off as eminently safe. Perhaps Dodge is playing to the middle with this one, hoping to boost sales by appealing to the masses. What will sell the Journey are some of its clever interior storage solutions, including two bins in the floor directly behind the front seats, and more storage underneath the front passenger seat cushion. While the Journey could seat seven in a pinch thanks to its optional third row, it's obvious after having seen it in person that those venturing aft must be small and limber. What won't help the Journey is its powertrain lineup, which includes a 2.4L World Engine four-cylinder with unimpressive fuel economy, a 2.7L flex-fuel V6, and a 3.5L V6 that produces a meager 235 HP. The latter mill is mated to a six-speed automatic, but is still noticeably underpowered compared to other 3.5L V6 engines offered by its competitors while not delivering an appreciable gain in fuel economy to make up for it.

    Europeans, however, can also choose 2.0L turbo diesel producing 140 HP and 229 ft-lbs. of torque, which is then mated to a trick dual-clutch six-speed automatic. Sigh... the grass sure is greener over here in Frankfurt, at least for Dodge Journey customers.

    Some may compare it to the Beetle, but in the end, it looks like a restyled Golf that's been left in the dryer for one cycle too long. The rear-engine, three-door, four-seat city car from Volkswagen, dubbed the up!, aims to be the V-dub equivalent of the smart, with a small footprint (3,450mm long and 1,620mm wide) and inoffensive styling.

    It's a strange dichotomy of sorts, with the 50-year old rear-engine drivetrain mated to a host of 21st century technology that allows on-the-go urbanites the right balance of size and cargo space. All the seats, except the driver's, fold down and can be removed, and once out they can be stored in the frunk (front-trunk) or in the rear cargo area. Naturally, drivers get climate control, sat-nav, and an on-board computer, along with a secondary screen for the co-pilot.

    Skoda Fabia







    As the Skoda Fabia Estate makes its public debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show, Skoda has included a little surprise which follows the same off-road trim package as the Skoda Octavia Scout and Roomster Scout obviously known as the Fabia Scout. Skoda calls it a design study, but chances are very high that the compact wagon will make it to series production.

    Much like the VW Cross Polo the Skoda Fabia Scout is essentially a normal Fabia Estate with large textured plastic paneling along the lower edges of the bodywork for a rugged off-road look.

    Much to our bewilderment Skoda has not prepared any press release for this design study debut. More details will be updated to this space as soon as Skoda provides the information.

    Mercedes C-Class







    Just a few months following the market debut of the Saloon, Mercedes-Benz is now unveilling the Estate version of the new C-Class. The Estate takes the trademark strengths of the Saloon, such as safety, agility and comfort, and combines them with a significant increase in spaciousness and versatility. Quite apart from being able to hold a maximum of 1500 litres, giving it a larger load capacity than any other premium-class estate in this market segment, the new C-Class Estate also offers a host of handy features for easy loading and safe transportation --a tailgate which opens and closes automatically at the push of a button, for example. Compared to the outgoing model, the new Mercedes Estate burns as much as twelve per cent less fuel. With an official NEDC consumption of 6.0 litres/100 km, the new C 200 CDI can make a single tank of fuel (66 litres) last for over 1000 kilometres. Just like the Saloon, the Estate version of the new C-Class has also been awarded an Environmental Certificate, which attests to the environmentally oriented development process as conforming with the international ISO standard. In terms of safety, the new Estate blazes a trail with innovations of the likes of PRE-SAFE® and the Intelligent Light System, and distinguishes itself as the safest car in this vehicle class. Seven airbags, belt tensioners and belt force limiters, as well as crash-responsive NECK-PRO head restraints all make up part of the standard specification.

    The new Estate adopts the C-Class Saloon's customer-focused concept for the design and equipment lines. There is a choice of three models - CLASSIC, ELEGANCE and AVANTGARDE - which highlight the vehicle's comfort or agility to differing degrees. The AVANTGARDE line features a large Mercedes star positioned in the centre of the radiator grille that emphasises its sporty, agile nature. This traditional distinctive mark of sporty models from Mercedes is now being employed in an estate model for the first time by the Stuttgart-based automotive brand. In the ELEGANCE model, a three-dimensional, louvred radiator grille with a high-gloss paint finish accentuates other brand-typical attributes such as comfort and luxury. The CLASSIC model, meanwhile, is deliberately more restrained and traditional.
