The concept car combines an innovative powertrain architecture – represented by the new SGE 900 cc Turbo twin-cylinder engine, equipped with the Multiair® system for dual petrol/methane-hydrogen fuel management, MTA gearbox and Stop&Start device – with the adoption of eco-compatible materials (recycled, recyclable or of natural origin) both outside and inside. The interior is upholstered with natural fibres (cotton and linen), woven coconut fibre and biodegradable elements, while the exterior panelling is made of semi-transparent eco-resin and the structure is treated with opaque ‘totouch’ paint.

Okay. We're completely and utterly dumbfounded. We just got back from the Subie-booth and after rummaging through the press CD for ten-minutes, we found exactly ONE sentence about the Impreza WRC Concept. That sentence reads: "The Concept Car, based on the new Impreza, conjures up images of future styling trends for a world rally car."
That's it folks. No word on power output or new all-wheel-drive wizardry, but we think it's safe to assume a blown two-liter flat four sends power to all four wheels via some revised drivetrain software. In the meantime

With the DJ dutifully spinning his vinyl, the Clubman finally had its coming out party, and what a party it was. The full range of standard, S, and D were all on hand to show off that new stretched shape with its right-hand suicide door and funky barn-door cargo ports out back. We've discussed this vehicle a lot and although some of the details seem less than purely functional, you have to expect that in a car that is all about image. We're sure it will still uphold the MINI reputation for excellent driving dynamics, but the looks just seem a bit fussy for some reason, leading some to question whether or not it will still be a true drivers car like its shorter brother. And yet the idea of a human sized back seat in a MINI seems very attractive. While there was some concern that making a big MINI would ruin the whole thing, we have to say that this rolling oxymoron looks quite compact in person still. We'll reserve judgment until we can get one for an extended drive, but it looks like this new "big" MINI still gets a spot on the party A-List for now.
Some stats from the press release are after the jump.

THE ALL NEW Audi A4

Audi put together its usual unveil shebang, with cameras, prompters, giant screens, a famous person come to sing praises, and a giant crowd. The audience surrounding the two cars being showcased, the RS6 Avant and the A4, made the venue look more like Wembley than a Frankfurt Motor Show hall. Other than Bryan Adams emerging with a guitar and an acoustic version of "Run to You," we didn't understand any of the press conference, which was entirely in German. Based on the presenter's body language, however, Audi feels very good about what it has and where it's going.
The new A4 takes plenty of lines from the A5. It's still svelte, it simply has a few more creases for you to catch your eye on. Along with a compendium of changes inside and out -- detailed in the exhaustive press release -- there are new engines that provide better power, get better economy, and exhale less pollution. The 1.8-liter is the runt of the petrol lot, and gets 160 bhp. The 2.0-liter diesel makes do with 143 bhp, but comes good with 260 ft-lb. The largest engine available is the 3.2 FSI with 265 bhp and 0-60 in 6.2 seconds.

Nissan Mixim Concept

Nissan fears that young people are falling out of love with the automobile and instead are crushing on the internet. Thus, it has attempted to fuse the two into an automobile everyone can love with the Mixim Concept. An all-electrical vehicle, the Mixim features scissor doors that slice into the roof, as well as a 1+2 seating arrangement with a central driving position and swiveling captain's chair. There's also an LCD command center for the pilot. That LCD panel can also display a virtual representation of the front wheels that actually turn in real time with steering inputs. Why does it do this? Perhaps to convince those teens in love with the internet that driving really is like a video game.
The styling is, uh... well, someone certainly styled it. While not in line with our tastes, some may like the many jagged edges found on the Mixim (How 'bout those wheels that look like monochromatic versions of Simon). The car is powered by what Nissan calls the Super Motor, which is fed by a pack of high-output lithium ion batteries. The Super Motor is unique compared to other electric motors in that it has two drive shafts and is able to power the left and right wheels independently. Perhaps that has something to do with the fact that the Mixim can be turned lock to lock in just half a turn of the steering wheel. Nissan says the concept has a max speed of 111 MPH and can go 155 miles between charges, though that's probably only ever been tested on a computer, which is fitting considering the automaker's goal with this concept.

SEAT Tribu Concept

VW's SEAT brand is getting a makeover, and the Tribu concept unveiled in Frankfurt shows us where the marque's headed, stylistically. Penned by new SEAT design chief and Lamborghini expat Luc Donckerwolke, the Tribu jettisons the more organic, flowing shapes of current SEATs and replaces them with taught lines and a face that is very Audi-looking. We have to believe that it also foreshadows a SEAT-branded crossover that'll have this same general shape, if not all the details, obviously.
Some of the concept's highlights include a fancy, rail-mounted rear hatch that opens in two stages. The first one opens it partially to allow for quick stowage of small items. When opened fully, it slides up over the roof. No engine specs on this design study are given, which leads us to assume it's not a runner. Still, the concept is said to incorporate three selectable drive modes -- Urban, Sport, and Freerun -- which respectively alter engine and suspension settings to favor economy/cleanliness, performance, and off-road ability. There's no traditional shifter, just wheel-mounted paddles for a sequential gearbox, and the rest of the interior is an exercise in typical concept fantasy fare wherer shapes and materials are concerned. In the Tribu's case, what you see outside is most important, and you can expect to see more of it in future concepts and production cars from the Spanish brand.

Toyota iQ

Flame surfacing comes to the smart." That was our first thought when we laid eyes upon Toyota's newest concept, the iQ. The 2980mm 3+1 practically shares every dimension with its big brother the Yaris, except length, and comes equipped with all sorts of innovative packaging. Normally a two-seater, a third seat can also be flipped up for a small adult or child in the back (hence, 3+1).
Unlike the VW up!, the iQ will have its engine mounted up front, powering the front wheels, although what specific powertrains are available is an open question. If we had to put money on it, we'd guess something below the one-and-a-half liter range in both gas and diesel, when it supposedly goes on sale in Europe in 2009.
All the details are in the press release after the jump, and, as always, a gallery awaits you underneath.
