GUIDE - Five Stud Conversion -308's etc
This is a guide to show you what’s involved to convert your Astra mk4 to five stud hub's and wheels.
* If you have four stud rear disks (1.8 non ABS)
Its a simple job, you can switch to the larger front, rear disks and hubs from a five stud car.
You will convert your standard front disks from 256mm, up to a larger 280mm or 308mm disks. And your rear disks from 240mm, to a larger 264mm
You will need for the front:-
2 x 5 stud front hubs
2 x 5 stud front hub carriers
2 x 5 stud front 280/308mm disks and pads
2 x 5 stud front calipers and brackets
You will need for the rear:-
2 x 5 stud rear hubs
2 x 5 stud rear hub carriers
2 x 5 stud rear 264 disks and pads
2 x 5 stud rear calipers and brackets
And you'll also need some extra wheel bolts!
* If you have four stud rear drums
It’s a bit more complex, the smaller engine Astra's have smaller drive shafts, so the shafts wont fit into the hubs at the front. Your best bet is to source some four stud rear disks from a 1.8 Astra SXI, some of these are four stud and have rear disks, meaning you get better brakes and rear disks, but keep your four stud. (if any one knows of a five stud smaller diameter front hub let me know - it may be possible a mk5 hub fits?) Someone let me know about the diesels driveshaft diameter
Anyway, back to the fitting of the front hub and disk from a five stud car. (to a car with rear disks)
1. Jack up the front of the car, secure it with and axel stand and remove the wheel Photo
2. Now, if you don’t have access to an air gun, I'd recommend you undo the hub nut first, someone can sit in the car and hold the brakes on while you undo the hut. Pull out the center hub dust cover with a screwdriver or similar object, remove the split pin and undo the castle nut, take care to not loose the washer. Photo Photo
3. Remove the brake hose, but remember to clamp the brake pipe so as little fluid as possible is lost.
4. Remove the brake caliper, there are two allen key bolts around the back of the caliper, they have plastic covers over them that simply pull out. Once these are out, the caliper and pads should come away from the disk. Photo
5. Remove the disk securing screw, it’s a small torx bolt on the front face of the disk, then pull off the disk.
6. Now you've got to remove the bolts at the top that hold the strut to the hub carrier, undo these but leave the bolts in the holes so the whole thing doesn't fall off until you remove the driveshaft.
7. Remove the steering track rod end, now, if the threads are all rusty, clean them up first, as if the nut is difficult to remove, the whole ball joint will just turn round, which makes it a right ballache to remove! I use a drill with a wire brush attachment, make sure its got no rust on the threads at all. Once the nuts off, use a ball joint separator, or just hit it with a big hammer to release it from the hub carrier
8. Now remove the lower pinch bolt, it under the driveshaft. Photo
9. Now its time to remove the driveshaft, set up a hub puller on the bub and tighten it until the shaft comes free Photo
10. Move the shaft to one side, and remove the two strut bolts, then release the lower pinch bolt by opening up the gap until the hub carrier comes free. Now the hub carrier and hub should be free Photo Photo
11. Now its a simple case of putting the bigger 5 stud hubs and disks on. See the following photos for a few pointers
12. The new hub carrier and hub ready to bolt on
13. The new 5 stud hub and carrier in position, the drive shaft is back in place
14. Torqueing up the front hub nut
15. Caliper and bracket, 308mm disk all added
16. Five stud wheel on, job done!
