prague, may 20 (ctk) - former deputy premier for the opposition civic democratic party (ods) miroslav macek and health minister david rath (social democrats, cssd) started saturday's national conference of the czech dentists' chamber with a fist fight.

Macek, a dentist by profession, was to moderate the discussion, but shortly before its beginning he announced that he had to settle a personal affair.

He approached rath from behind and slapped the back of his head. Shocked, rath stood up, indicated that he would leave, but returned and faced macek, calling him a coward. Macek then struck rath with his fists, blows which rath returned. After the row, macek left the conference.

They were only separated by rath's aide michal sojka. Macek explained the attack by personal reasons as rath had uttered unflattering words about his wife.

Rath said that macek's conduct was a sign of cowardice as he attacked him from behind. Rath stressed that macek was an aide to president vaclav klaus.

The civic democratic party (ods) has distanced itself from macek's behaviour, though it has understanding for him.

"whatever our human understanding for macek and his wife, we are distancing ourselves from the way miroslav macek settled his dispute with david rath, who is going too far in his personal attacks," reads a press release of the ods, provided to ctk by its spokesman jiri sezemsky.

In a recent interview with the daily lidove noviny, rath said that macek's poor ethics as evidenced by his having married his wife for money.

"i have known him from the time when he went to every party with a different girl. Suddenly, he married for millions," rath said.

Macek subsequently vowed to rath that he would settle the matter with him "as guys do."

"it was purely an affair between me and rath. No politics was involved and it had nothing to do with the chamber," macek said.

"it was of an educational character," macek told the news server idnes after the incident.

After the incident, one of the delegates apologised to rath on behalf of all the present.

Apology was also voiced by jiri pekarek, the chairman of the czech dentists' chamber. "what was done by macek was useless," pekarek said.

"none of us agree with it. However, we are embarrassed that as a doctor, he [rath] is against doctors," a delegate from moravia said.

The mood at the conference of dentists' chamber, attended by roughly 1,000 dentists, was stormy from the very beginning. Pekarek said that doctors resented rath's stripping them of guarantees and prosperity. Pekarek was alluding to the social democrats' chief election slogan called "guarantees and prosperity."

dentists feel offended that rath has called them the puppets of the ods, pekarek said.

Rath has repeatedly said that the ods, the strongest opposition party, was behind the current week of health personnel unrest
