The SOMACA plant is located south-east of Casablanca and the Group is the majority shareholder. The facility meets EAQF “A” quality standards and also holds ISO 14001 environmental certification. Its 1,200 employees and two production lines make Kangoo and Kangoo Express for the local market, and Logan (Dacia) for export to French and Spanish markets. In 2009, SOMACA will also produce Sandero.

Renault confirms Tangier plant construction 16/06/2009
The production of the two first models of Renault group's Tangier industrial plant is expected in early 2012, said, on Monday in Rabat, the company's chief executive officer, Carlos Ghosn.

During a joint conference with the Moroccan Minister of Industry, Reda Chami, Ghosn confirmed his group's commitment to the construction of the industrial plant, which is expected to produce 30 vehicles per hour, with an annual production capacity of 170,000 vehicles.

The euro 600-million investment, whose actual construction will start in September 2009, will also be expanded two years later to be able to produce up to 400,000 units a year, added the CEO.

The project, to create some 6,000 direct jobs, will produce Renault's low-cost Logan car, besides the utility vehicles of Renault, Dacia and Nissan, 81% of which will be exported.

Ghosn, who was received on Monday by king Mohammed VI, described the Tangier project as a strategic one and part of the group's efforts to reinforce its position in the historically strong countries such as Morocco, Turkey and Romania.

On Sunday, the CEO also had paid a visit to the site where the factory will be built.

For his part, Reda Chami underlined that “Morocco is going to build a real car industry,” adding that the plant will be one of the most competitive in the world.

Earlier, there had been much rumour about the cancellation of the whole project, but Renault and Moroccan government officials had always maintained that the project will certainly see the light of day.

Last February, Nissan, which was Renault's partner in this project, declared that it would suspend its participation in the project as result of financial difficulties caused by the global slowdown.
